    Mr Mark Chernick began his career in designing and manufacturing children’s related products in the mid 1980’s for the company he established in Washington – Play Visions which has since become a unique toy manufacturer on the global market place.  With distribution in many countries, and the constant surfacing of copies into the market, Play Visions has learned how to employ various methods to control the copies before they get outside of China into the export markets.  Mark has been a featured speaker and published writer on these topics and can offer some practical solutions that you probably have never thought of employing.

    Mr Ronald Grudziecki is a U.S. lawyer and partner in the Intellectual Property Practice Group of Drinker Biddle & Reath. He has more than 30 years experience in patent prosecution, litigation, licensing and other aspects of intellectual property. He was also an active adjunct faculty member at the Georgetown University Law Center where he taught the Advanced Patent Law Seminar for over 20 years. He is listed in the Who’s Who of Trademark Lawyers, the Who’s Who of International Business Lawyers, USA etc. He served as the President of LES USA & Canada in 2000 and is the current President of LES International.

Long Wise Inc. owns exclusive manufacturing and distribution licensing rights in Hong Kong, China and many other Asian countries for a number of international brands including Fiorucci, Morgan, Gianfranco Ferre, Roberto Cavalli, Vincent Van Gogh, Marie Claire etc. It has over 40 licensees and 30 franchisees in Asia.
     

     

     
    • Beijing Officials’ visit to The Chinese University of Hong Kong

    A delegation of Beijing officials led by the "北京市保護知識產權工作組辦公室" will be visiting Hong Kong on 16-18 January 2007 to join a staff exchange programme organised by Intellectual Property Department of HKSARG. On 16 January, our Treasurer Ms Alice Ngan, Director, Technology & Licensing Office, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, will give a talk to them on IP commercial/investment activities in Hong Kong (香港知識產權的商業投資情况) followed by a tour of the CUHK led by our Secretary Mr Billy Lam, Technology Licensing Co-ordinator, CUHK.

      Mr Melvin Jager, President of LESI gave an overview of the structure and work of LESI.

      Dr Lui then gave an overview of the patent protection and the general requirements of obtaining a patent. In particular, she guided listeners through the unique requirements and pitfalls of patenting inventions that have roots in "traditional knowledge" with the apparent contradictions inherent therein. She concluded by stressing that those companies that are active in the traditional medicine field should have a clear strategy on how to extract value from all forms of intellectual property, including branding and trade secret protection.
